“Keep close to Nature’s heart . . . and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain - John Muir, naturalist
In 1915 the U.S. Government established the Recreation Residence Program to create incentives for families to help support forest preservation and management programs, and it has been so successful that Congress reaffirmed its importance through CUFFA in 2000. But the Forest Service is failing to honor either the letter or the spirit of the law, and needs to be held accountable for this legacy program. In short, the Courts need to tell the Forest Service to remain true to the deal that the U.S. Government struck with the cabin owners nearly a century ago.
Something is being done NOW to protect cabin owners’ rights. Believing that Congress already has acted to preserve the program, a vanguard group of Minnesota cabin owners have joined together to jumpstart a grassroots effort to hold the U.S. Government accountable for the deal it struck with cabin owners nearly a century ago, and reaffirmed as recently as 2000. Realizing only those cabin owners who join a suit will benefit, these owners are acting now in order to protect their rights under the law.
